Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club Untold story

Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club Preppy Rowing Blazer Womenswear
1938
I feel proud of myself to be the first in the Ivystyle/preppy blogosphere to introduce this story. The Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club was founded on May 4th, 1938 and is the oldest active women's club of its kind in the United States. The club was established because no other rowing club allowed women to join. The clubhouse, located at 14 Kelly Drive on historic Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, was built in 1861 as the home to the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society. The Humane Society of Philadelphia was organized in 1770 and its responsibility was saving the citizens from drowning while skating. The Philadelphia Skating Club was the first club of its kind in America. Its members skated on frozen rivers and lakes in the Philadelphia area. The club's goals were to instruct the art of skating while also rescuing people who fell through the ice. When the Humane Society ceased to function, its organization and responsibilities were acquired by the Skaters Club of the City and County of Philadelphia. Many of the ice skaters that were in the humane society of Philadelphia made their own club, which was the Skater Club of the City and County of Philadelphia

The club was founded by Ruth Adams Robinhold, who placed an ad in a local newspaper seeking women to form a rowing club. Almost 100 women showed up at the first meeting; after a $5 monthly fee was charged, 17 stayed to form the club. The founding members were Ruth Adams Robinhold, Gladys Hauser Lux, Lovey Farrell, and Mrs. Ernestine Bayer, along with thirteen additional women that became the core founders.

Pendleton Woolen Mills First Newspaper Advertisement 1901

Pendleton Woolen Mills First Newspaper Advertisement 1901
Hello everyone, one of my favorite American companies is Pendleton Woolen Mills. All the Pendleton clothing  that I own is top-notch quality. For my throwback Thursday post I'm taking you way back to one of the company earliest advertisements. This advertisement dates back 1901 and it's their first newspaper advertisement. The company used to be the Indian Robe and Picture Company and their main consumers were the Indian reservation. The pictures were taken by Lee Moorhouse. Moorhouse was fascinated with Indian Culture and he started to record the local history around Pendleton, Oregon and his Indian images were heavily used on Pendleton Woolen Mills advertising until 1914.

Throw Back Preppy Thursdays:Lilly Pulitzer 1976 I LOVE LIZA

Lilly Pulitzer 1976

One of my favorite and influential designers to me is Lilly Pulitzer. I never take my wardrobe too seriously. She best said it the best, “Life's a party, dress like it"! I like being myself. I wear go to hell pants, bright yellows and Kelly green chinos. Pants and shirts with sea animals embroidered all over. Bright needlepoint caps, that's my wardrobe and that's how I live it makes me happy my party and I'm the host live yours. I wear my outfits more than once and wear them with wrinkles I don't care I'm having fun. Enjoy the wonderful pictures from this 1976 Lilly Pulitzer catalog. I believe that's actually Lilly Pulitzer daughter Liza Pulitzer on the cover. Liza Pulitzer is one of her three children. Liza Pulitzer was a dress designer for Lilly Pulitzer, designing the company's Junior Line. If that's her for sure then that dress was most likely designed by her. After that, she became a very successful real estate agent in Palm Beach. Ladies comment what you think?

If you didn't notice I'm a huge fan of  vintage  L.L. Bean advertisements. I had the privilege to view their 2014 fall/winter collection yesterday. Stay tuned guys for an upcoming post. I really like what they did with the Chamois shirt also known as "The Shammy". The Shammy is a L.L. Bean preppy and outdoor staple. It falls in the same group of must haves like L.L. Bean boots, Norwegians and camp socks. For 80 years, it has been a classic. Leon Leonwood Bean introduced the shirt in 1927 as a leatherette shirt, but  he renamed the shirt Bean Chamois Cloth Shirt in 1933. He also tested the shirt for two years in his usual hunting trips. What I liked the most from the Mr. Bean was that every product had to meet his expectations before coming out to the public. Chamois a soft cloth fabric made in imitation of chamois leather. The name “Chamois” or “Shammy” comes from the name of the  mountain goat  found in Eastern Europe. This goat leather was very supple and soft. It was mainly used in gloves in the late part of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. The name chamois was then applied to the thick  and tough yet soft cotton flannel shirts because it had similar characteristics. The shirt is perfect for the outdoors because it's thick, wind resistant, warm,. It features double needle stitching in key points like armholes, sleeves and side seams. Loving the prices on the advertisements!

From the Crispyarchives I love seeing pictures from the Vassar College which used to be an all women college. I wish all girls in every campus would dress like this. Their style is so elegant yet so nonchalant. They looked comfortable in every setting from the classrooms to outside the campus.

Throw Back Prep Thursdays: BOAST USA

Today's oldsshool prep picture is the infamous Boast tennis shirt. This brand was established in 1973 Greenwich, Connecticut by Bill St. John was a tennis professional. Many people thought that the logo was a marijuana leaf which was the reason it was banned in some schools. The logo was actually a Japanese Maple leaf. The famous polo shirt with the maple leaf, which in my opinion has the best looking logo among tennis shirts. In the few incoming days I will post a complete history of the brand.
